TEACHER EDUCATION SPECIALTY AREA STANDARDS
These standards were approved by the NC State Board of Education in January 2009 and are to be reflected in the re-visioned teacher education programs that became operational by Fall 2010.

Elementary Grades Teacher Candidates
The Teacher Education Specialty Standards require elementary grades teacher candidates to have a general knowledge of the fundamentals of music, dance, theatre and/or visual arts AND be able to integrate content areas with the arts to enhance classroom instruction and student learning. See below (from the Teacher Education Specialty Area Standards, adopted by the State Board of Education in January 2009):

Standard 6: Elementary grades teacher candidates integrate art throughout the curriculum (The Arts).
21st century teacher candidates create meaningful learning experiences which are relevant, rigorous, and enhance the content by providing alternate ways to think critically and communicate ideas. Elementary teacher candidates are knowledgeable in and are able to design and implement learning tasks that demonstrate:
  1. a general knowledge of the fundamentals of music, dance, theatre, and/or visual arts.
  2. the ability to create interdisciplinary lessons/units that integrate the content areas with the arts to enhance classroom instruction and student learning.

Pre-service education in the four arts disciplines (dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts) helps to prepare teachers to meet the NC Professional Teaching Standards including: making content engaging, relevant and meaningful; supporting the SCS core subjects (the arts are core under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act); using a variety of instructional methods; differentiating instruction to different learning styles and modalities; helping to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills; and implementing 21st century skills.
