The Arts Education Coordinators met on Friday, September 30, at Meredith College, in Raleigh. The agenda included a joint Department of Public Instruction and Department of Cultural Resources update. The joint update addressed all three components of the Comprehensive Arts Education Plan for NC, as defined by the Senate Bill 66 Task Force: Arts Education, Arts Integration, and Arts Exposure. The update included current policy and legislation, Essential Standards training materials and professional development plans, national initiatives, an A+ Schools Program overview and update, NC Virtual Public Schools, NC Arts Council Arts in Education opportunities, information from the NC Museum of Art, NC Symphony, as well as Arts Education Resources, Professional Association Updates, and Announcements.

The afternoon included a networking lunch, sharing of arts education resources, professional association updates, and announcements. Four break-out groups met in the afternoon and reported out to the full group: 1) Sharing Local Professional Development Plans for Implementing the Essential Standards; 2) "Hot Topics" (focused on the new Teacher Evaluation instrument); 3) Assessment in Arts Education; and 4) Course Coding and Honors Policy. A summary of the work of the breakout groups will be posted on this site in the near future.

The next meeting of the NC Arts Education Coordinators will be hosted by Winston-Salem/Forsyth Schools and will take place on Friday, March 23, 2012, at the Southeast Center for Contemporary Art, in Winston-Salem.
